Netflix has greenlit season three of Sweet Magnolias. And after that cliffhanger, it’s just what we needed to hear. Dan Paulson, the show’s executive producer, released a statement shortly after the renewal was announced saying, “We’re pleased to be commencing on our third season for Netflix, and we’re looking forward to returning to Serenity.”
JoAnna Garcia Swisher, Brooke Elliott, and Heather Headley, among others, helped spread the word via social media by posting about the show on their own Instagram accounts. If you’ve been keeping up with the episodes of Sweet Magnolias, you’ll know that Maddie, Dana Sue, and Helen all have major choices to make that will likely have far-reaching consequences for the residents of Serenity.
Thankfully, there is an endless supply of margaritas for them to discuss their issues over. The three are doing their best to make their way through life and love in their sleepy little village with the white picket fences, but things have gotten more complicated than ever. But following a cliffhanger that could have far-reaching consequences for everyone, let’s take a drink and discuss what to look forward to in the next season. Sweet Magnolias Season 3.

Sweet Magnolias Season 3 Potential Release Date
Season three of Sweet Magnolias was officially greenlit in May 2022 via social media posts from the show’s writers’ room. The message said simply, “We’re headed back to Serenity, y’all!” We’re overjoyed to announce that production on Season 3 of Sweet Magnolias has begun. I can’t wait to have you guys back in my home. New episodes started production on July 18, and the crew celebrated by posting a photo of the flowers and the show’s title adorning the backs of the directors’ chairs.
‘Shall we begin?’ they penned. I’m thrilled to announce that today marks the start of production on Season 3 of Sweet Magnolias and that everyone is home in Serenity. Since then, we’ve made great strides, and we’re happy to report that production ended up in October, bringing us that much closer to the elusive air date.

We finished filming Season 3 last night,” showrunner Sheryl J. Anderson tweeted, announcing the news. It has been a pleasure to spend a second season on Serenity with such a talented group of people. We hope you like the gift that our group of people has created for you. I appreciate them so much and can’t wait until you see it!! It is currently unknown when the females will return to our screens.
Since the premiere dates of the first two seasons were so different from one another, it’s also difficult to make an informed prediction. The first season premiered in May 2020, and the second season premiered in February 2022. (this was largely down to pushbacks caused by the pandemic). A presentation like this, which has little special effects, usually takes between nine months and a year to produce. Therefore, we shouldn’t hold our breath for new episodes of Sweet Magnolias to premiere in the spring of 2023. (so between April to June). Sweet Magnolias Season 3.
Sweet Magnolias Season 3 Cast
Without Maddie Townsend (JoAnna Garcia Swisher), Dana Sue Sullivan (Brooke Elliot), and Heather Headley (Heather), Sweet Magnolias would be missing something essential (Helen Decatur). Everyone is definitely coming back. Their three kids, played by Carson Rowland’s Kyle, Logan Allen’s Annie, and Anneliese Judge’s Tyler, will all be returning.
And that’s a wrap on Season 3! Thank you to everyone who contributed to Serenity this year. And to everyone who’s waiting: It’ll be worth the wait. Promise. 🌸 photo by @sheryljanderson pic.twitter.com/oyoV1GZRsa

While Chris Klein’s philandering Bill had a reduced role in Season 2, we can still expect to see him pop up at least a couple of times, if only to check in on his many, many children. Jamie Lynn Spears, who plays new mom Noreen, has also announced she’ll be returning by posting photographs from her dressing room on the first day of production with the comment “It’s giving #Season3.”
Before Noreen’s comeback, the natural blonde had posted a photo of herself with dark hair to tease fans. Maddie’s on-again, off-again husband Ronnie, played by Brandon Quinn, had a redemptive journey in the second season and was welcomed back into the family home. You can probably count on his return unless something catastrophic occurs involving a time jump during which he disappears.
Cal (Justin Bruening) was taken into custody after losing it after long-buried rage issues resurfaced, while young Isaac (Chris Medlin) is still trying to get his bearings following his search for his birth parents in Serenity. It would be strange if Cal suddenly vanished without a trace. We’ll let you know as soon as we hear anything regarding potential new cast members for the program. This all is Sweet Magnolias Season 3 cast.

Sweet Magnolias Season 3 Plot
Speaking with ET earlier this year, Sweet Magnolia’s actor JoAnna Garcia Swisher said that season three would take off “near to where we left off,” adding, “I don’t think you can come back months later and say, ‘Whatever happened with Helen?’ and ‘Is Justin in jail?’ Why not go big or go home?” Even before season three was officially confirmed, showrunner Sheryl J. Anderson didn’t hide the fact that she was hoping for more time with the gang in the future.
Especially when a dubious character from Dana Sue’s past keeps popping up to cause trouble. At Mrs. Francis’s wake, Dana Sue’s daughter Annie was confronted by an unknown woman who called her mother a “life ruiner” in the season two finale. In the episode’s final moments, the same lady is seen on surveillance footage slashing the tires of a Sullivan’s delivery van.
She was instantly recognizable to Maddy, Dana Sue, and Helen upon viewing the tape, prompting them to exclaim, “She’s back.” “I will just say she has a past in common with our girls and some other persons in town,” showrunner Sheryl J. Anderson told TVLine of the unnamed character. She disappeared for a time, but now she’s returned with something to accomplish.
She claims she is “settling scores” by returning to her old stomping grounds. Since welcoming Ronnie back into the family home, Dana has also been working on mending her marriage to him. Will he go back to cheating on her, or will they stay together this time? But Dana Sue is just the beginning of the drama; the season finale ended on a cliffhanger when Helen accepted an engagement proposal from her ex-boyfriend, Ryan.
She must now decide between him and her new boyfriend, Erik. Headley told TVLine, “I could see her going either way and of course, they don’t tell me.” “Netflix is worried that if you give me some mac and cheese, I’ll leak the beans.” The aftermath of Cal’s anger management difficulties manifesting themselves after losing his position as high school coach led to the altercation at Sullivan’s, where he was eventually taken into custody by the police.
How will Maddie respond now that she knows this hidden part of Cal? “In a potential third season, it’s certainly something Cal needs to unpack and explore whether he has handled prior situations effectively, why he lost it when not losing it is so essential to him, and what decisions he can make going forward,” Sheryl told Entertainment Weekly. For “himself and others he cares about,” the author writes.
There’s also the ongoing hint that Maddie should replace the Mayor if he loses the upcoming recall election in town. If this happens, the Mayor’s spiteful wife will be even more enraged than she already is, and it will only be a matter of time before she starts smearing Maddie’s family (especially considering how easy she caused trouble for Cal).
At last, there’s Issac, who has traced his origins and found his biological parents, only to find that their reactions to his existence are as different as chalk and cheese. Although Bill may be the most fertile man in Serenity, he showed little interest in his hidden child. To be honest, he had no idea his child even existed until recently. Once things have settled down, though, will he reconsider? Is he going to be okay with Issac’s friendship with Noreen, the mother of the child that caused him to divorce Maddie?
