Bass went undercover to capture two prisoners who had escaped, spending the night in their hideout and blending in with the crooks. He met up with Billy Crowe, the posseman he had assigned to the task, early the following morning and gave him instructions to remain with the group of criminals strapped to a cart at a designated spot.
A prisoner talked about Mister Sundown, a supposed cannibalistic slave catcher, during the night, upsetting the other inmates. Later, while everyone was asleep, the same inmate tried to assassinate Bass but was badly beaten instead.
The next morning, Bass rode there with Billy in tow after learning from his acquaintance Minco about a new criminal by the name of Silas Cobb. Even though Silas was able to get away, Billy accidentally fired and killed him.
Having never killed before, Billy felt a great deal of shame. But Bass, in his wisdom, was able to comfort him. Bass then decided to tell the wife of Silas Cobb of her husband’s passing.
While pausing to get his horse on the way back, Bass noticed an enigmatic figure mounted on his mount. The shadowy figure stopped a few meters away, but as Bass raised his gun, it vanished from sight.
