Nightmare Alley Plot/ Storyline (Spoilers Alert)
The story began with a man Stanton Carlisle (Stan), who burned his house, and, left with no option, took a job in a carnival. Owner Clem explained to him how he lured people into the job of carnival geeks. His owner told him how he physically and mentally abused them for his advantage.
Stan started working with Zeena and her alcoholic husband, Pete, who performs the clairvoyant act. Pete and Zeena were using a coding language to fool the audience. With the help of the coding language, they portrayed that they had some supernatural powers to contact the dead people, and they called the show “spook show”. Stan learned the act and proposed his fellow performer perform separately from the carnival.
Later on one night, Stan accidentally gave the wrong bottle of Alcohol to Pete, from which one person died.
Stan and Molly left the carnival immediately and fled away. Stan established himself as “The Great Stanton”. He started performing the act in the name of the psychic act for the elite class of New York with Molly.
His life went smoothly until he encountered psychologist Dr Lilith Ritter in one of his shows. Ritter understood the act of Stan and tried to expose him. However, Stan saved himself by using his code language and publicly humiliating her.
Judge Kimball had appointed the Stan for testing Ritter, in which he came out with flying colours. Kimball wanted to communicate his dead wife, for which he wanted to use Stan’s knowledge.
Intrigued by his skill, Ritter invited him into her office and shared Kimball’s personal information to help him. They both started coming close to each other, and Stan revealed his guilt and past in front of Ritter.
Later, Kimbal introduced Stan to Ezra Grindle, a powerful criminal. Ezra wanted to talk to Dory, who died of forced abortion.
Meanwhile, Molly came to know about Stan and Ritten and decided to leave. After some begging from Stan, she chose to stay and help Stan for the last time. However, Stan lost control of Ezra, and he realised that Dory was fake. He tried to kill Stan but happened otherwise. Stan killed him and his henchman and later reached to Ritten for help.
However, he realised that the Ritter was scamming all the time for taking revenge for her humiliation in the show. After some hustle between the two, Police arrived. But, Stan fledged and finally took the job in another carnival.
