Oklahoma’s Tulsa is where Sartorius was born. He was adopted and sent to Virginia since his birth parents were unable to care for him. His adoptive parents raised him in Reston, Virginia. He began acting in plays as a fan of musical theatre at the age of 7.

He created lip-sync videos on Vine before Musical.ly was founded in August 2016 and amassed over 8 million followers. He said that he was bullied less as a result of social media, adding, “I was quite introverted before I started using Musical.ly.” The software allowed me to act silly without anyone noticing by focusing my attention entirely on the camera.
