This year’s Lollapalooza in Chicago included an incredible backstage jam session between Metallica and Joseph Quinn from Stranger Things. The renowned rockers caught up with the British actor, whose metalhead character Eddie Munson revived interest in the band’s 1986 masterpiece “Master of Puppets” during season four of the Netflix sci-fi series, hours before Metallica’s headlining performance at Lolla on Thursday (July 28).

“I really like [Stranger Things]. Metallica leader James Hetfield tells Quinn that they had been since season one while sat backstage at the festival. “It’s a bonding event for me and my kids.” Quinn spent months honing the challenging metal guitar solo, and Hetfield acknowledged the actor’s diligence by thanking him for doing the song properly. Quinn informed the gathering, “I was listening to it nonstop for two years.” I really feel a connection to you folks.

The actor’s much-discussed scene occurs as the entire group works to defeat Vecna, the season’s main antagonist. To divert Vecna’s protecting fleet of bat-like monsters in the Upside Down, Eddie and Dustin (played by Gaten Matarazzo) plan to put on a full-fledged performance of “Master of Puppets,” with Quinn providing the electric guitar accompaniment.

Metallica Jam With Stranger Things Actor Joseph Quinn

At the event, Metallica invited Quinn to join them for a jam session in their tuning room. Quinn performed the challenging song perfectly with James Hetfield and Kirk Hammett, with the help of drummer Lars Ulrich, who also provided the beat. You’ve been hired! We’d want to make an announcement: Metallica is now a five-piece, folks, Hammett adds after they finish the introductory riff, with Ulrich jokingly adding. Quinn received a signed B.C. Rich guitar mimics the instrument he played in Stranger Things from Metallica as they wrapped up the jam session.

Later that day, Metallica paid homage to Quinn’s Munson while performing “Master of Puppets” as the band’s final song at Lollapalooza. The band timed their rendition of the song with Eddie’s while presenting the most memorable sequence from Stranger Things on stage in front of a giant television screen.

Metallica expressed their joy for the spotlight on “Master of Puppets,” which has also ascended to the top 40 of the Billboard Hot 100 after Eddie’s rock star moment, on social media when the final episodes of season four were released earlier this month. The band stated on Instagram, “We were all stoked to see the final result and when we did we were utterly blown away. Just by catching a glimpse of Joseph Quinn’s hands for a brief moment in the teaser, several people could guess the song!
