What Is Nvidia Lite Hash Rate Technology?
To begin, what is LHR? The “hash rate” of Nvidia LHR graphics cards is automatically halved when they’re used for Ethereum (ETH) cryptocurrency mining. This means that LHR GPUs are less profitable for potential mining purchases because of their higher power draw compared to the now lower hash rate, without going into too much detail.
LHR GPUs are expected to be purchased by gamers if they aren’t profitable for miners. The LHR technology was first introduced in the GeForce RTX 3060, but it was broken and then reintroduced again quickly after. The GeForce RTX 3060’s Lite Hash Rate limiter didn’t work out as planned when it was first introduced.
The GPU’s full mining potential was unlocked by an accidental beta driver release the week after it was released. Two months later, Nvidia was back with a second attempt at LHR technology across the majority of its lineup. What GeForce GPUs Have LHR?
This is a list of the GeForce graphics cards with LHR technology:
- Nvidia RTX 3050
- Nvidia RTX 3060
- Nvidia RTX 3060 Ti (Founders Edition unaffected)
- Nvidia RTX 3070 (Founders Edition unaffected)
- Nvidia RTX 3070 Ti
- Nvidia RTX 3080 (Founders Edition unaffected)
- Nvidia RTX 3080 Ti
Most of Nvidia’s RTX 30-series GPUs will have LHR applied to them by mid-May 2021. RTX 3060 Ti, RTX 3070, and RTX 3080 cards built before the change in manufacturing won’t be affected by this. The reason Nvidia’s limited-run Founders Edition models don’t support LHR is that they were all made before the company introduced its limiter. Since the switchover, all GeForce GPUs have come standard with LHR technology.
The work-hard-play-hard GeForce RTX 3090 didn’t get LHR, and all models have full hash rate capability. The only current GeForce RTX 30-series GPU without LHR is the monstrous RTX 3090, which sits somewhere between a professional and a gaming GPU.
Is There A Way To Tell If I Have A Geforce LHR?
No matter which of the newer RTX 30-series cards are purchased, you’ll be able to tell that it is an LHR GPU by looking at the box. In contrast, AMD’s Radeon graphics cards do not currently have any restrictions on the hash rate of their competition.
Has Lhr Been Shown To Have An Impact On Gaming?
