Tyre Nichols, a Black man in his twenties, was beaten by police officers and passed away three days after the incident. On Friday, the Memphis Police Department terminated the employment of a sixth officer for his role in the events that led up to Nichols’s death.
At the beginning of the investigation into the department, the officer, Preston Hemphill, was placed on administrative leave. On Friday, about a month after Nichols was assaulted, the MPD made the decision to terminate his employment.
According to the department, Hemphill broke several standards, including those governing his personal conduct, his truthfulness, his compliance with Taser laws, his compliance with uniform regulations, and a guideline that governs inventory and seized property.
According to statements made by police on Friday, the investigation into Nichols’s death is still active and “several” policemen are being looked into as potential suspects.

“I can confirm that I represent Memphis Police Officer Preston Hemphill, who was the third officer at the initial stop of Mr. Nichols. Video one is his body cam footage,” Gerald told The Commercial Appeal in an email statement at the time. “As per departmental regulations, Officer Hemphill activated his body cam. He was never present at the second scene. He is cooperating with officials in this investigation.”
A request for comment sent to Gerald on Friday afternoon was not immediately met with a response.
According to Gerald, in the clip from the body camera that was shot from Hemphill’s point of view, the officers can be heard yelling at Nichols to get out of his car before they are shown forcibly taking him from the vehicle. The footage was taken from Hemphill’s point of view.
While officers were holding Nichols down, another cop sprayed him with pepper spray. The spray impacted the officers who were holding Nichols down. As Nichols runs away, an officer with a taser, whom Gerald has identified as Hemphill, fires at him. This causes the camera to wobble.
After giving chase for a short while, Hemphill eventually turned around, stopped rushing after Nichols, and could be heard stating, “I hope they kick his ass.”
Gerald was questioned by The Commercial Appeal on Monday about whether or not he believes Hemphill will be charged with a crime. That query did not elicit a response from him.
In addition, he did not provide an answer to the subject of whether or not Hemphill was a member of the SCORPION Unit.
