New Orleans police say they have caught a suspect after a shooting on the route of the Mardi Gras parade that killed one person and hurt four others.
Police say they have a suspect in custody after one person was killed and four others were hurt in a shooting along a Mardi Gras parade route on Sunday night. The shooting happened before the city’s loud celebration this week.
New Orleans Police Department Chief Deputy Superintendent Hans Ganthier said at a news conference –
“We were able to find two weapons on scene and also apprehended what we believe to be a shooter.”
“Whether he’s the sole shooter or not, we will determine through investigation.”
According to the New Orleans Police Department, the shooting hurt a young girl, a woman, and three men. One of the men was later pronounced dead. The department said that the other four people who were hurt are in stable condition.

Around 9:30 p.m., gunfire broke out along the route of the popular Krewe of Bacchus parade, which is usually held before Mardi Gras on Tuesday.
This stopped a classic New Orleans celebration and showed that gun violence is still a big problem in all parts of American life. The parade was supposed to start Sunday afternoon, just after 5 p.m.
Police officers, along with people from the Orleans Parish Sheriff’s Department, the Louisiana State Police, and the Department of Corrections, went to the scene when they heard gunshots, Ganthier said.
He said that it is not clear what led up to the shooting. Ganthier said –
“This is really not something we wanted to see. We really wanted this to be a safe Mardi Gras and we’ll continue to work towards that end.”
“However, we really, really want to get the public’s help and if there were other individuals involved, please call Crime Stoppers.”
The Gun Violence Archive, a non-profit that tracks gun violence, says that there have been 80 mass shootings in the US in 2023. A mass shooting is one in which four or more people were shot, not including the shooter.
