Some new video games based on the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles franchise are performing exceptionally well on Valve’s digital storefront, contributing to a recent surge in the franchise’s popularity that can’t be attributed to Michael Bay’s eponymous film adaptations. The release date for the highly anticipated video game compilation TMNT: Cowabunga Collection has finally been announced, satisfying the curiosity of fans who have been waiting for news of the Collection’s arrival.

Developers Digital Eclipse, who specialise in porting retro games, have reportedly confirmed the release date of their TMNT: Cowabunga Collection to IGN. On August 30, 2022, the Collection will be released, allowing those with a penchant for nostalgia to play classic games from their youth on cutting-edge gaming consoles.

Players will be able to play classics like “Turtles in Time” on their PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC without having to track down a working arcade cabinet. There was a lot of buzz when Digital Eclipse announced the TMNT: Cowabunga Collection a few months ago, and for good reason: many of the legendary TMNT games included in the collection are difficult, if not impossible, to find for current-gen consoles.

Thankfully, the developer has put together a gaming collection of more than a dozen games, making them accessible to new audiences as well as the original fanbase for the first time in over two decades. The games in the TNMT: Cowabunga Collection are, interestingly enough, available to a wider audience individually, albeit primarily through console software emulation on PC, which isn’t always coded up to playable standards.

However, functional, updated, and restored versions of classic gaming hardware, such as the original Sega Genesis console modded with an HDMI port, aren’t cheap on the current market, and functional gaming media that would carry the games (like cartridges) are nearly impossible to find at this point. As a result, almost no one outside of a small subset of dedicated gamers will be able to enjoy the games included in TMNT: Cowabunga Collection on their original consoles.

The repackaging of the various TMNT games into a single TMNT: Cowabunga Collection will make them playable on more systems. Bonus content includes the original design documents, online TMNT Arcade play, the Turtles in Time arcade, TMNT: The Hyperstone Heist, and Tournament Fighters, all courtesy of Digital Eclipse.

Konami also displayed the console collector’s box edition of TMNT: Cowabunga Collection, which comes with a game disc signed by Kevin Eastman, a cloth poster of Eastman’s TMNT adaptation, an acrylic diorama with multiple layers, an enamel pin set, and trading cards. Also included in the TMNT: Cowabunga Collection is a 180-page full-color artbook with chapters devoted to each of the 13 games.
