Peter Dinklage is best known for playing the smart, complicated antihero Tyrion Lannister on Game of Thrones, a role that fans love and that won him four Emmys. But now, he’s moving into the role of a leading man with a new musical movie version of the romantic classic Cyrano.
His wife, Erica Schmidt playwright, and theatre director Erica Schmidt wrote the script, which is pretty cool. Even though Dinklage is very private and doesn’t use social media, we’re learning more about him and his wife now that they’ve worked together on a high-profile project.
Who is Erica Schmidt?
Schmidt is a playwright and theatre director who has won awards for his work. He wrote and directed the 2019 version of Mac Beth. Also in 2019, she wrote and directed a musical stage version of the 1897 French play Cyrano de Bergerac, which is the same source material as Dinklage’s new star vehicle.
Dinklage has said that in the play, Cyrano, who has a big nose in the original, helps a man with normal looks win over Roxanne, a woman they are both in love with, by writing love letters for him. This is similar to how catfishing works today. Roxanne does fall in love, but is it with how good-looking the man is, or with how passionate Cyrano’s words are? Dinklage told The New York Times in December 2021.
“Schmidt was asked to write an adaptation of Cyrano, and she had the great idea of stripping it down to its bare essentials, replacing the long monologues about love with love songs.” Dinklage then became the main character in the play, which had songs written by the band The National.

Did Erica Schmidt Write Her Cyrano Adaptation for Peter Dinklage?
Dinklage says that his wife may have “unconsciously” written her Cyrano part for him by getting rid of Cyrano’s famously big nose. However, there is also no mention of Dinklage’s height in her play.
In an interview with the New York Times, Dinklage said, “Erica took off the nose, and I thought I had to play this part because now it’s about a guy who doesn’t know what to do when he’s in love.” “But I’m pretty sure she wasn’t just replacing the nose with my size to make the character look different.
She only wanted to find. It’s kind of what I do: When I play a role, I don’t just play someone my size; I play a real person with many more layers. Schmidt was not sure at first if Dinklage should play the part. “Peter asked, “Could I read it?” Now, when your life partner is a huge celebrity that everyone knows, there is a way that everything becomes about him, so I have to be honest and say I was a little resistant,” she told Financial Times.
“But after he read it, it was clear that he was the best person for the job. So many things about Peter’s personality were the same, such as his sharp mind, wit, and sense of humor. Dinklage told CBS News that he “begged” his wife for the part, in part because he wanted to sing on stage. “If you’re an actor, you always want to do something that scares you… I hadn’t sung since I was a child.
How Did Erica Schmidt Meet Peter Dinklage?
The first time the two people met was just as dramatic as any musical. He told The New York Times, “It was about 18 years ago.” “We were all at a friend’s house when someone said, ‘They’re walking the elephants through the Queens-Midtown Tunnel.’ The circus was in town, and it was snowing.
A long line of elephants was being walked through Manhattan. It was like something from a beautiful, crazy, romantic movie about the end of the world. See? Movies are always on my mind. So that was the night we met, the night the elephants walked through Manhattan.” What a wonderful tale!
Did Erica Schmidt Make A Movie With Peter Dinklage?
Yes! After seeing Schmidt’s play Cyrano, in which his girlfriend Haley Bennett played Roxanne, director Joe Wright (Atonement, Pride, and Prejudice) decided to make a movie out of it and asked Schmidt to write the screenplay. Dinklage was a natural choice to act in the movie with Bennett, even though he is short and doesn’t look like a typical Hollywood leading man.

He told The New York Times, “It’s so funny that when I talk about this movie, people ask me, ‘How does it feel to play a leading man?'” “That’s still a part of the conversation since clichés are still everywhere. Beautiful white people have been the romantic leads for the past 100 years.” Schmidt also says that Cyrano’s story is universal because we all think something about ourselves is “ugly,” but Dinklage is perfect for the movie for reasons other than his looks.
“Peter is the right person for this role because he is smart, funny, and good with language. He’s like this character in that he says, “I don’t trust that you’ll see me for who I am,” she told IndieWire. For his role, Dinklage is already getting Oscar buzz. Cyrano opened in a few theatres in December so it could be eligible for the Oscars. It will be in limited release on January 28 and in wide release in February on a date that hasn’t been set yet.
