The National Basketball Association announced on Saturday that NBA legend and Hall of Famer Dikembe Mutombo is undergoing treatment for a brain tumor (Oct 15). Born in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, 56-year-old Mutombo has long represented NBA teams abroad. He played for the Denver Nuggets, Philadelphia 76ers, Atlanta Hawks, and the original New Jersey Nets during the course of his long career.

According to the NBA, “Dikembe Mutombo is now having treatment for a brain tumour.” He is receiving excellent care from a team of specialists in Atlanta, and his spirits are high as he begins treatment. Because of the seriousness of Dikembe’s condition, he and his loved ones have requested privacy as they tend to him.

He was named the NBA’s Defensive Player of the Year four times during his career. The Nuggets picked Mutombo in the first round of the 1991 NBA Draft. He went on to play for both the Atlanta Falcons and the Philadelphia 76ers. He played in both games of the NBA Finals. For 18 years, he was a professional player before calling it quits in 2009.

To help improve living conditions in his home country, he founded the Dikembe Mutombo Foundation in 1997. Before entering the NBA, Mutombo was a star for the Georgetown University Hoyas, where he played from his sophomore year on and earned a degree in languages. His son Ryan currently attends Georgetown University.
