According to the reports of the police, a gunman opened fire inside of a classroom building on the campus of Michigan State University on Monday evening, causing three persons to be killed and five others to be injured.

Deputy Chief Chris Rozman announced shortly after midnight that the suspect was later found dead off of the campus of Michigan State University from a gunshot wound that was apparently self-inflicted.

“This truly has been a nightmare that we are living tonight, but we have remained laser-focused on the safety of our campus, our students, and our surrounding community,” Rozman said.

All five of the injured victims were taken to Sparrow Hospital for treatment, with some of them suffering from injuries that are considered to be life-threatening.

The shooting began at 8:18 p.m. inside Berkey Hall, which is located on the northern edge of campus and is home to the Department of Sociology at Michigan State University. At 8:31 in the evening, the school issued a “shelter-in-place” order, which instructed students to remain inside the building and to barricade themselves.

“Run, Hide, Fight,” MSU said in the alert. “Run means evacuate away from danger if you can do so safely, Hide means to secure-in-place, and Fight means protect yourself if no other option.”

According to the police, the shooter then moved from Berkey Hall to the MSU Union, which is located a short distance away, and opened fire there. Classes for the next two days at MSU have been canceled, and students have been strongly discouraged from coming to school on Tuesday.

On campus, law enforcement personnel from multiple agencies, including the FBI, ATF, and the Michigan State Police, were providing assistance. Through Wednesday, the FAA has imposed temporary flight restrictions above the campus of Michigan State University.

After hearing what he described as “two faint gunfire” earlier in the evening, Ben Finkelstein, a senior at Michigan State University, reported that he hid under his bed.

Another student who is also a senior at MSU said she is physically ok but “absolutely terrified.”

“I have been physically and mentally preparing for a mass shooting since elementary school,” the student told Fox News Digital. “Honestly it just doesn’t feel real.”

Gretchen Whitmer, the governor of Michigan, said that Michigan State Police told her about the shooting.

Whitmer tweeted, “Let’s wrap our arms around the Spartan community tonight,” Sen. Debbie Stabenow also said on Twitter that she was keeping an eye on the shooting. Michigan State University is in the city of East Lansing and has more than 50,000 students.
