When one of the two costumed vocalists leaving “The Masked Singer” at the beginning of season nine was revealed to be a Hollywood legend, there wasn’t a dry eye in the house. The guessing portion of the game show was back, with themed episodes and the usual mix of mystery visitors.
Although a new rule enabling one saving per episode allowed the judges to save one of them, they chose not to do so this week. The Gnome was the first character to emerge for the evening, and his rendition of the classic song “When You’re Smiling” complimented his elfin features.
The gnome was Dick Van Dyke, a 97-year-old man. The judges speculated that the vocalist in the mask might be Mel Brooks, Dustin Hoffman, or Robert DeNiro. But when Van Dyke was revealed, the judges were inconsolable, and Nicole Scherzinger started crying.
Van Dyke was hailed by host Nick Cannon as “the most renowned and seasoned entertainer” to ever participate on the show and broke William Shatner’s age record from the previous season.
It was time to listen to the second disguised performer, who sang a cover of Whitesnake’s “Here I Go Again” once everyone had calmed down. The judges’ best guesses included Joan Jett and Ann Wilson of Heart.
