Jaime Herrera Beutler, a long-serving Republican U.S. Representative, was defeated in the primary. Following the attack on the U.S. Capitol on January 6, she was one of 10 House Republicans who voted to impeach Trump.

Gluesenkamp Perez, who co-owns an auto shop with her husband just across the Columbia River in Portland, asserted that she is more in line with voters because she runs a small business and lives in a rural area of the district.

Although she owns a gun and has stated she opposes an assault rifle ban, she does support raising the purchase age for such weapons to 21. She also supports policies that encourage access to abortion and programs to combat climate change. She has assured people that “I am not your normal Democrat.”
