Most likely, Superman is the first superhero you think of when you hear the word. The red-capped defender of Metropolis from the planet Krypton is undoubtedly the face of DC Comics (sorry, Batman), and both ardent and casual fans are familiar with his story.

His background in movies is also a significant factor in his appeal. starting with Superman by Richard Donner in the past (1978). The famous portrayal of the character may be a little old and cheesy, but thanks to Christopher Reeve’s contagious charisma and humorous attitude, it has endured as a true classic, even inspiring three sequels and a Supergirl (1984) spin-off.

Superman Returns (2006) continued the Donner movies while skipping Superman III (1983) and Superman IV: The Search for Peace, despite the fact that it officially had four sequels (1987). Superman Returns wasn’t a bad movie, but it didn’t meet box office projections and couldn’t match the magic of the first movies.

Even still, that movie’s reception was nothing compared to that of Man of Steel (2013), the most divisive and contentious Superman movie to date. Henry Cavill’s more realistic portrayal of the character is beloved by moviegoers, who also praised the film’s aesthetically breathtaking action scenes.

The movie’s melodramatic tone, in contrast, was criticized by the film’s detractors as missing the point of the Superman persona and as wanton destruction for the sake of destruction. The DC Extended Universe’s Superman situation didn’t get much better when Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016) and Justice League (2017) garnered mixed reviews as well.

Since that time, Superman’s filmography has been in doubt. Who knows how long Man of Steel 2 was stuck in production hell, and rumors of a Michael B. Jordan-led reboot that might have happened never materialized.

It’s hardly surprising that a new Superman will be a part of the concept being developed by DC Studios’ new CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran for a cohesive DC Cinematic Universe. The most recent feature film to showcase Clark Kent, Superman: Legacy, marks the official beginning of DC’s new generation and the start of what director James Gunn has dubbed the “Gods and Monsters” phase.

We still have some information about the anticipated project because it has only recently been announced and is still in the very early stages of production. Read on to learn what we currently know about Superman: Legacy and see what they are.
