THE TOWN OF NORTH VERNON, INDIANA – An officer was involved in a gunshot that took place at a rural Jennings County location on Friday afternoon, and the Indiana State Police (ISP) have launched an investigation into the incident.
According to information provided by ISP detectives, members of the Jennings County Sheriff’s Office SWAT team responded to an address in the 4000 Block of West County Road 175N at around 2:30 p.m. in order to serve an arrest warrant on Devin C. Lark, 29, who resides in Seymour. There were multiple criminal warrants out for his arrest.
Lark took off on foot at the arrival of the deputies, who pursued him. Lark apparently produced a handgun when the police were attempting to place him under custody, and he refused to drop the weapon when the officers ordered him to do so.
The man was struck by a single shot fired by a deputy. Officers responded quickly and began administering first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation. The individual was taken by EMS to St. Vincent-Jennings Hospital, where a physician there confirmed that he had passed away.
The event did not result in any injuries to law enforcement officers. The inquiry, which is still ongoing as of this writing, was asked to be carried out by the Indiana State Police by the Jennings County Sheriff’s Office (JCSO). When everything is said and done, the Jennings County Prosecutor’s Office will be given the case to review.
The deputy’s name will not be made public at this time for security reasons. According to JCSO, the deputy will be placed on administrative leave in accordance with the standard operating procedure.
