In addition to returning cast members like Skyler Samuels and Sergio Peris-Mencheta, the sequel also features newcomers like Wu Jing, the highest-grossing male performer in China’s history.
The director, Ben Wheatley, and the screenwriters, Dean Georgaris, Erich Hoeber, and Jon Hoeber, are all returning for the sequel.
What will the plot of Meg 2 The Trench be about?
Wheatley hinted in April 2021 that there might be additional gigantic sharks in the sequel, and now we have an official synopsis to back up his speculation.
Meg 2: The Trench is described as “a literally larger-than-life thrill ride that supersizes the 2018 blockbuster and takes the action to higher heights and greater depths with multiple massive Megs and so much more!” and is expected to be released this summer.
“Dive into uncharted waters with Jason Statham and global action icon Wu Jing as they lead a daring research team on an exploratory dive into the deepest depths of the ocean. Their voyage spirals into chaos when a malevolent mining operation threatens their mission and forces them into a high-stakes battle for survival.
“Pitted against colossal Megs and relentless environmental plunderers, our heroes must outrun, outsmart, and outswim their merciless predators in a pulse-pounding race against time.”
The novel Meg: A Novel of Deep Terror by Steve Alten (which inspired the original film) and its sequel, The Trench, may be adapted in some way. However, the movie’s portrayal of a pregnant megalodon betrays its infidelity to the source material.
In the follow-up novel, Jonas is caring for the progeny of that shark, who has now grown to monstrous size, leading to another confrontation between shark and man when Jonas seeks the aid of an eccentric billionaire.
