Scorsese isn’t holding back with his latest cast list, which includes a slew of A-listers for Killers of the Flower Moon. DiCaprio takes the lead as Ernest Burkhart, the man who plotted the deaths of many members of the Osage community and was later convicted of his crimes.
Robert De Niro will play William Hale, a rancher, and fellow murder offender, and Jesse Plemons will play Tom White, the guy responsible for solving the case. Lily Gladstone plays Mollie, Burkhart’s skeptical wife, Brendan Fraser plays lawyer W.S. Hamilton, and John Lithgow plays Prosecutor Leaward, according to the film’s IMDB page.
In addition to the musical talents of Jack White, Sturgill Simpson, and Jason Isbell, Canadian actor Tantoo Cardinal also makes an appearance.
Killers of the Flower Moon, written by journalist and author David Grann, details a string of murders committed by members of the Osage Native American tribe in the 1920s.
Over five years, once oil was discovered on their land in Oklahoma, members of this community were brutally killed. The Osage were planning to murder every last member of their tribe because they were about to acquire vast quantities of money that were rightfully theirs under United States law.
In Grann’s book, hundreds of Osage Nation members may have been killed because of their ties to the oil industry and the billions of dollars in riches that came with it. According to the official synopsis, Scorsese will examine how the FBI responded to these deaths and how former director J. Edgar Hoover is connected to the case.
The facts are as follows. Scorsese’s upcoming feature film has a guaranteed runtime of 3 hours and 20 minutes, so there’s probably much more to it than we know.
