Judge Mathis Early Life
On April 5, 1960, Mathis was born in Detroit, Michigan. Charles Mathis and Alice Lee Mathis were his parents. After divorcing Charles, Alice, a maid and nurse’s assistant, reared Mathis by herself in Detroit in the 1960s and 1970s.
They relocated to Herman Gardens in 1964, and they stayed there with relatives until roughly 1970. They left the housing complex because of the rising rates of violent crime and drug usage.
During his early years, Mathis ran into legal issues and was arrested several times for crimes such as robbery, breaking, and stealing purses. When he was seventeen years old, a hidden weapons charge landed him in jail for nine months.
During Mathis’s visitation in Wayne County Jail, his mother revealed that she was suffering from colon cancer. The magistrate supervising his case issued an order for him to obtain a G.E.D. or risk additional jail time and early probation.
