Joe Negroni was a Puerto Rican-descended American vocalist. He was a pioneer of rock and roll and co-founder of the rock and roll group Frankie Lymon and the Teenagers.
During the Great Depression, Negroni’s family migrated from Puerto Rico to New York City in the 1930s. Negroni met and befriended Herman Santiago in Manhattan, where his family dwelt.
Negroni, Santiago, and two other friends, Jimmy Merchant and Sherman Garnes, would sing to the rhythm of Doo-Wops in front of Santiago’s stoops (building stairs) in the early 1950s.

Negroni, who had a baritone voice, and his companions were known as the “Ermines” with Santiago as the lead singer. On one occasion, the Ermines shared the stage with the “Cadillacs” at P.S. 143 (Public School 143). The Ermines altered their name to “Coupe de Villes” and then “The Premiers”

The original members of “The Teenagers,” Joe Negroni, Herman Santiago, Frankie Lymon, Jimmy Merchant, and Sherman Garnes, were admitted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1993, and into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame in 2000. In the 1998 film “Why Do Fools Fall in Love,” Jon Huertas portrayed Negroni.
