Selena Quintanilla Early Life
On April 16, 1971, in Lake Jackson, Texas, Selena Quintanilla-Perez entered this world. Selena was born into a family of Jehovah’s Witnesses, where her talent for singing was encouraged from an early age.
Selena and her brothers used to play for customers at their father’s Mexican restaurant, which was founded by Abraham Quintanilla Jr. However, a recession in the 1980s led to the restaurant’s closure, leading to the family’s insolvency and eventual eviction.
After relocating to Corpus Christi, the Quintanilla family included Selena in the band she and her father managed, Selena y Los Dinos. Performing at events like weddings and even on street corners, this band helped the family make ends meet. By eighth grade, Selena’s father had seen that she was destined for a career in music and had taken her out of school.
Even so, she graduated high school at the age of seventeen and went on to enroll at Pacific Western University. She learned the ropes in the business world. Selena’s foray into Tejano music began around this time. This style, which fuses polka, jazz, and country with Latin and German influences, is hugely popular among Mexicans living in the United States.
