The leak of the season 1 finale of House of the Dragon has been strongly criticized by HBO. The American television network has issued a statement to the public confirming that a copy of this weekend’s episode, titled “The Black Queen,” was made public due to an apparent malfunction in the show’s international distribution. The source of the breakdown remains unknown (via Deadline).
On Friday (October 21), a spokeswoman for HBO stated, “We are aware that the tenth episode of House of the Dragon has been posted on unlawful pirate sites. It would appear to have come from a distribution partner located somewhere in the EMEA region.

HBO is actively monitoring the situation and removing copies of their shows from the internet. We are sorry that this illegal action has caused a disruption in the viewing experience for longtime fans of the show. However, they will have the opportunity to watch a version of the episode that has not been tampered with when it premieres on Sunday on HBO and HBO Max, where it will stream exclusively in 4K.
This is hardly new territory for either HBO or the franchise, as sequences and episodes from previous seasons of Game of Thrones often become available online before they aired on television.
During the concluding season of the show that came before Game of Thrones, director David Nutter urged viewers to avoid seeing incomplete copies of the episodes because they do not do justice to the hard effort put in by the cast and crew of the show.
“I think a lot of fans of the show might hear about leaks, but I think fans of the show don’t want to confront them,” he said in an interview with The Wrap. “I think fans of the show don’t want to find out what they are.”

As someone who uses the internet only sometimes, I have never, ever stumbled onto a spoiler that I wasn’t actively looking for. However, I believe that the number of leaks has become out of proportion.
Up until this terrible incident a few days before the season finale, the leaks had been significantly less common during the first season of House of the Dragon.
