Elizabeth Hubbard, known for her roles as Dr. Althea Davis and the ruthless Lucinda Walsh on the daytime serial operas The Doctors and As the World Turns, respectively, and for her 14 Broadway appearances, has passed away. She turned 89.
Hubbard dἰed at her home in Roxbury, Connecticut, on Saturday. Her son, Jeremy Bennett, told The Hollywood Reporter that she dἰed of cancer.
In I Never Sang for My Father, which came out in 1970, Hubbard played Gene Hackman’s girlfriend, a gynecologist. She also appeared in The Bell Jar, Ordinary People, Cold River, and Center Stage.
She played Dr. Althea on NBC’s The Doctors from 1964 to 1982. From 1984 until September 2010, she played the manipulative mogul Lucinda on CBS’s As the World Turns.
She told TV Guide in 2010 –
“I’ve been so lucky playing Lucinda — a character who could do anything.”
“She could lie, break the law, she didn’t have to be good, and she always had that checkbook ready. Always!”
Hubbard was nominated for 11 Daytime Emmys and won two of them. In 1974, she won for her role as Davis, and in 1976, she won for playing Edith Wilson, Woodrow Wilson’s wife, on NBC’s First Ladies Diaries.
Her next eight nominations were for her work on As the World Turns, but she didn’t win any of them. In 2016, she won her last nomination for a role as an American s*xologist on the digital soap opera Anacostia.

Hubbard was born in New York on December 22, 1933. He was one of three children. Her mother, Elizabeth Wright Hubbard, was one of the first women to get a medical degree from Columbia University and a leader in homeopathic medicine.
Hubbard graduated from Radcliffe College in 1955, studied acting at London’s Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, and made her Broadway debut as a replacement actress in a revival of Threepenny Opera soon after it opened in 1955.
Her other Broadway shows were Compulsion, A Day in the Deaʈh of Joe Egg, I Remember Mama and Dance a Little Closer, which was her last one. Hubbard’s first job was on the live 15-minute CBS soap opera Guiding Light in 1962.
She recalled –
“I replaced some actress who had flipped her lid.”
“They just needed somebody to round out the week, but then they kept me, and the rest is history.”
She and Gerald Gordon, who played Dr. Nick Bellini on The Doctors, were a popular daytime TV couple. She then appeared on another CBS daytime drama, The Edge of Night, and on ABC’s One Life to Live as the rich Estelle Chadwick from 1983 to 1984 before joining As the World Turns.
She has also been a guest star on The Virginian, Marcus Welby, M.D., Law & Order, Hope and Faith, and Life on Mars.
She said –
“I’ve been very lucky in this thing called daytime.”
