A shooting killed one person, hurt a police officer, and shut down a neighborhood near Dupo, Illinois, several hours ago. On Sunday night, a friend of the suspect’s family asked the public to pray.
Angela Cates said –
“I’ve only spoken to her via text.”
Cates is talking about her best friend, whose son, according to the police, locked himself in a house on McBride Avenue near Interstate 255, killed one person, shot and hurt a Dupo police officer, and caused chaos for almost a mile of the neighborhood.

All of this started around 1:15 p.m. on Sunday at the corner of McBride Avenue and Stolle Road. On Stolle Rd., there were police cars from Waterloo, Fairview Heights, Cahokia Heights, the St. Clair County Sheriff’s Department, and the Illinois State Police.
They told the people around them that it was too dangerous to go home. Cates said that her friend was talking to the police on McBride. Cates said –
“It’s very hard on her. She’s a parent.”
“No matter what we do, our children…we love our kids.”
Cates said that the man the police are looking for has been having problems lately. She said –
“He’s been through a lot. He does have a good heart. I don’t know what has happened here.”
“So, I’m not going to pass judgement on anybody.”
But Cates knew that the police were looking into a crime.
“I believe that killing anybody is ever right. That’s wrong.”
Cates relied on her faith to help her be there for her best friend, her friend’s family, and the whole community, which was under attack from morning to night.
“If we would all just stop and pray. There’s been a lot of people that have been devastated today. A lot of people.”
Many of the people we talked to gave us the name of the alleged shooter. The police would not say whether or not that was true. Police also haven’t said who died or what happened to the injured officer.
