With the release of Creed in 2015, the long-dead Rocky franchise got a new lease on life. Fans of the Best Picture winner from 1977 and its many sequels were skeptical when they heard that Rocky Balboa (Sylvester Stallone) would pass the torch to a younger boxing champion. In the end, those fears were unfounded, because Creed not only lived up to the legacy of the franchise, but it might even be better.

Creed is a brilliant reboot that gives old characters more depth and gives the franchise a new iconic name. Adonis Creed (Michael B. Jordan), the son of Rocky’s former rival and close friend Apollo Creed, is the new hero of the franchise (Carl Weathers).

In the first Creed movie, which was directed by Ryan Coogler (Black Panther), Adonis gave up a good job to follow his dream of becoming a professional boxer. He did this because he didn’t want to live in his father’s shadow. He goes looking for Rocky Balboa, who trains Adonis to become not only a strong fighter but also a better person.

Steven Caple Jr.’s (The Land) Creed II showed that the first movie wasn’t a fluke. It was a compelling story about Adonis becoming a husband and father, and it also brought back Ivan Drago (Dolph Lundgren) and his son Viktor Drago (Florian Munteanu) as well-developed bad guys.

Since Sylvester Stallone was done playing Rocky Balboa, it seemed like Creed II would be the last movie in the Rocky series. But not long after Creed II came out, it was said that a third movie would be made. This time, Michael B. Jordan will not only come back to play the main character and produce the movie, but he will also direct it for the first time.

Creed III (2023) is shaping up to be a good ending to the trilogy, with Ryan Coogler still on board as an executive producer and Michael B. Jordan ready to show the world how he can direct a movie. Here’s what we know so far about the next part of Adonis’s story before Creed III comes out this year.

Is There a Trailer for Creed III?

When and Where Is Creed III Releasing?

Creed III was supposed to come out in November 2022, but it’s now been said that the next part of Adonis Creed’s story will come out on March 3, 2023. Creed III is expected to open in theaters, just like the last two movies. Since MGM, which owns the Rocky franchise, was recently bought by Prime Video for a lot of money, it seems likely that Creed III will be available to stream on Prime Video.

What is the story of Creed III?

When we last saw Adonis, he had just won a fight with Viktor Drago, ending a long-standing rivalry since Viktor’s father, Ivan Drago, killed Adonis’s own father Apollo Creed in Rocky IV (1985). Essentially every character gets a somewhat happy ending. Adonis makes peace with his family legacy, Rocky is able to reconnect with his estranged family, and even Ivan and Viktor decide to put this petty rivalry aside and focus on building a proper father-son relationship.

The next film in the series will likely focus on Adonis growing even further in becoming a better father to his daughter, and not following in the footsteps of other parental figures in this series who lost connection with their own children.

Who Is Making Creed III?

Since Michael B. Jordan is in charge of directing, this is likely to be one of his most personal stories yet. Rarely does the actor who plays such a well-known role also get to direct the story of the role, but it makes sense that Sylvester Stallone directed the second, third, and fourth Rocky movies as well as the sixth Rocky Balboa movie (2006).

Michael B. Jordan often works with the original director of Creed, which was Ryan Coogler. Ryan Coogler and his wife Zinzi Coogler will also be the producers of Creed III (Judas and the Black Messiah). Ryan Coogler also wrote part of the story, while his brother Keenan Coogler (Space Jam: A New Legacy) and co-writer Zach Baylin wrote the screenplay (King Richard).

Ludwig Goransson, who composed the music for the first two films of “The Mandalorian,” won’t be back to do it this time. Instead, his co-composer on “The Book of Boba Fett” (2022), Joseph Shirley, will do it. Cinematographer Kramer Morgenthau (The Many Saints of Newark) and costume designer Lizz Wolf (Jupiter’s Legacy) are back from Creed II.

Editor Tyler Nelson (The Batman), production designer Jahmin Assa (Mid90s), and casting director Alexa L. Fogel round out the rest of the crew (Judas and the Black Messiah). Jordan told Empire that directing the movie was a freeing experience. He got advice from other actors-turned-directors like Denzel Washington and Bradley Cooper.

Who’s Starring In the Creed III Cast?

Michael B. Jordan will not only direct Adonis Creed, but he will also play the title role for the third time. This will be the first time that Sylvester Stallone won’t be there as Rocky Balboa. However, Tessa Thompson (Thor: Love and Thunder) will be back as his wife Bianca Creed, and Phylicia Rashad (Soul) will be back as his mother Mary Anne Creed.

The two main boxers that Adonis fought in the first two movies are also back. Both of them are real-life boxers. Tony “Bomber” Bellew (Creed) played “Pretty” Ricky Conlan in the first movie, and Florian Munteanu (Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings) played Viktor Drago in the second. This could mean that Creed is putting some old rivalries aside to take on Jonathan Majors as Damien Anderson, who is a new opponent. Other well-known real-life boxers will also be in the movie.

Legendary cutman Jacob “Stitch” Duran is back from the first two movies, and boxing world champion Canelo lvarez will make his acting debut as Saul. Selanis Leyva (from Spider-Man: Homecoming), Spence Moore II (from “We Are Who We Are”), and Thaddeus J. Mixson (also from “We Are Who We Are”) round out the cast (South of Heaven). Thaddeus Mixson (South of Heaven).

Even though it’s “regrettable” that Stallone won’t be back, Jordan has assured fans that Rocky’s presence will still be felt in the movie.

“I think it’s in the spirit of Rocky, whose fingerprints will always and forever be on this franchise. The essence of him is still there. But at the same time, the Creed franchise is moving in a strong direction.”
