The FBI is looking into the “suspicious death” of a woman on the cruise ship Carnival Sunshine, but the company says the death seems to be natural.
The FBI field office in Columbia, South Carolina, said Sunday that the woman was found unresponsive during the ship’s trip to Nassau, Bahamas, on February 27.
When they realized she wasn’t responding, medical staff and crew members tried to save her life, but the FBI said she was pronounced dead on the ship. Carnival Cruise Line spokesperson Matt Lupoli said in a statement to CNN –
“Both the deceased and her husband were debarked in Nassau and Bahamian authorities have already investigated the circumstances and are conducting an autopsy.”
Even though the FBI is still looking into it, the cruise line said Tuesday that “all indications” suggest the woman died of a “natural death” due to a medical condition. Carnival Cruise Line said in a statement –
“We will defer to the FBI on any specific details which may possibly be released at a later date as we fully respect the investigative process, but our initial emergency medical response was appropriate and it appears that this was indeed a medical situation that sadly resulted in the death of a guest.”
The FBI would not say anything about the statement. FBI spokesperson Kevin Wheeler told CNN –
“I respectfully decline to address their statement as this is an ongoing matter.”
The cruise line has said before that it is helping with the investigation. The FBI release says that when the ship got back to Charleston on March 4, an FBI team looked through the room of a passenger for evidence.
