Brett Steven Maher (born 17 April 1973) is a retired Australian basketball player. He played with the Adelaide 36ers in the NBL from 1992 until 2009. Maher represented Australia at the 1998 FIBA World Championship, 1996, 2000, and 2004 Summer Olympics. Brett Maher replaced Mark Davis as 36ers captain at the start of the 1997 NBL season, and under the coaching of Adelaide and Australian basketball legend Phil Smyth, Maher played a key role in three of the four Adelaide 36ers NBL championships (1998, 1998–99, and 2001–02) and was the club MVP six times.
He played in four NBL All-Star Games (1996, 1997, 2005, and 2006) and was awarded to the All-NBL First Team in 2000 and 2003, Second Team in 1997, 1998, and Third Team in 1999, 2002. He earned the Larry Sengstock Medal for Grand Final MVP in 1999 and 2002. Maher is one of two players to earn the NBL Grand Final MVP twice, along with Perth Wildcats’ Ricky Grace in 1990 and 1993.
Maher, from Adelaide, South Australia, was signed by the Adelaide 36ers after impressing for the Sturt Sabres in the Australian Basketball Association. He was a 1989–1991 Australian Institute of Sport scholar. The 36ers got a fantastic deal as he played eighteen seasons, thirteen as captain. Maher averaged 16.9 points, 4.2 assists, and 4.3 rebounds in 526 36ers games from 1992 to 2009, including finals games. On April 4, 1992, the Clipsal Powerhouse opened and he made his 36ers debut.
