The more than 50-year bassist of the band, who had lately suffered a hip ailment, passed away peacefully at his Texas home.

Billy Gibbons and Frank Beard of the band acknowledged Hill’s passing in a post on Instagram. Hill had recently undergone hip surgery.

The message stated, “We are heartbroken by the news that our Compadre, Dusty Hill, passed away in his sleep at home in Houston, Texas, today.”

“We shall miss your constant presence, your pleasant disposition, and your unwavering dedication to giving that monumental bottom to the ‘Top,’ along with hordes of ZZ Top fans all across the world. You will be sorely missed, amigo. That “Blues Shuffle in C” will always be a part of us.

Hill was forced to miss gigs as part of the band’s summer tour due to a recent injury. The cause of death has not received any additional information.

After Gibbons’ former band, Moving Sidewalks, disbanded, ZZ Top’s debut song was released in 1969. In 1970, the same year their debut record was published, they played their first concert, with Hill joining them.

The group would go on to become well-known with 15 albums and were well recognised for successes like Gimme All Your Lovin’ from 1983 and Legs from 1984. Hill also unintentionally shot himself in 1984; he never lost his sense of humour about it.

“My initial thought was, ‘Shit!

‘followed by ‘Ouch’,” he stated in an interview from 2016. “I couldn’t believe what I had done was so foolish. I still have no idea how I would manage it.

Hill not only played bass guitar but also keyboard, backup and lead vocals for the group. In 2004, they were all honoured with inductions into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

He made cameos in Deadwood and the third instalment of Back to the Future, and he also portrayed himself in King of the Hill.

Hill added in 2016: “I don’t believe in regrets at all.” What is the purpose? There are some things I’ve done that, if I had it to do over, I might change them or leave them alone. However, once something is finished, I am the type of person to simply shrug it off and move on with my life.

Industry tributes are pouring in, with Flea calling Hill “a real rocker” and Go-Gos member Kathy Valentine tweeting that Hill is “a Texas icon.”
