NASA released the names of the four astronauts who will be on the Artemis II mission on Monday. This will be the first manned mission to the moon in more than 50 years. The spacecraft will fly by the moon and take 10 days to get back to Earth. There are three Americans and one Canadian on the crew.
Victor Glover, Christina Koch, and Reid Wiseman from NASA, and Jeremy Hansen from the Canadian Space Agency are the four astronauts. Reid Wiseman, who used to be the head astronaut at NASA, will be in charge of the mission.
Victor Glover, who was the first Black man to live on the International Space Station and did four spacewalks during his 168-day stay, and Christina Koch, who has the record for the longest single spaceflight by a woman and did the first three all-women spacewalks, will also be there.
Jeremy Hansen is the fourth member of the crew. He is an astronaut with the Canadian Space Agency, but he has never been to space.
The Artemis II mission is part of NASA’s Artemis program, which aims to put the first woman and the next man on the moon by 2024. The mission will test the capabilities of the Orion spacecraft and the Space Launch System rocket, which will be used for future manned missions to the moon.
NASA got over 18,000 applications for the Artemis program, which made it hard to choose the people who would go on the missions. The four astronauts chosen for Artemis II have been through a lot of training, including simulations of the mission and survival training in harsh environments.
