Kid Rock had a very violent response following Bud Light’s collaboration with transgender influencer Dylan Mulvaney. Mulvaney, who gained notoriety on TikTok with her video series “Day 365 Of Girlhood,” told her Instagram fans that Bud Light had sent her a customized can bearing her face to mark a year since she started her gender transition.
Some social media users have criticized the deal, leading to calls for a boycott of Bud Lite and its parent corporation, Anheuser-Busch. When a transgender rights activist appeared in a Canadian International Women’s Day marketing campaign in February, Hershey’s chocolate reacted similarly.
The controversy surrounding transgender brand ambassadors is representative of a larger discussion over transgender women’s engagement in female concerns and venues.
While some believe transgender women should be treated the same as normal women, others contend their differences call for protecting previously fought-for women’s rights.
Rock, real name Robert James Ritchie, uploaded a video to his social media sites that began with him facing the camera while wearing a baseball cap that stated MAGA backward (Make America Great Again).
When he turned to face the camera, Rock, 52, had a message for the beer company. The rapper said as the sh0t widened to reveal Rock holding an assault rifle (According to Blabbermouth)
“Grandpa is feeling a little frisky today. Let me tell you as clear and concise as possible.”
Rock then primed the weapon and started firing rapidly at numerous Bud Light cases perched atop a table by a river. He turned to the camera and raised his middle finger before firing at the beer cases until they exploded open and spilled liquor out of them.
In his video, which has been viewed more than 213,000 times on Instagram and 2.3 million times on Twitter in the two hours after it was posted, he never specifically addressed Mulvaney. But, the violent film was condemned by transgender activists, one of whom claimed it left her feeling “sick” and “heartbroken.”
Susie Green, community director of GenderGP, a transgender health provider told:
“It felt violent and threatening, and made my fear for the people I love who are trans come to the fore yet again as hate is celebrated. What are we becoming as human beings that this kind of behavior is tolerated? Cheered on even. It’s sickening and shameful.”
“I hope Kid Rock has a very fun time buying things he doesn’t like politically and then shooting them in his garden. But it would probably be better if he transitioned to Adult Rock by growing the f*** up.”
The author said she was more concerned about Bud Light’s support for the transgender community because of the rising attacks against it in the United States, including the hundreds of bills proposed in various states to restrict transgender rights and access to healthcare.
Stone told Newsweek:
“What I want to know is what are they doing to support their transgender staff and staff with transgender family amidst this moral panic? How are they working to oppose the over 300 anti-trans bills in the U.S. currently? What are their policies in regards to trans healthcare? Pronouns on a can is a gesture but its an empty one if they aren’t putting in the work.”
Mulvaney’s Instagram picture showing her face on a Bud Light can spark outrage from conservative critics. Matt Walsh, a conservative commentator, tweeted:
“The good news is that Bud Light tastes like rain water that someone siphoned out of a tin bucket so it should be very easy to boycott.”
Tweeted Mike Crispi, a podcast host and former Republican New Jersey primary candidate for Congress:
“Boycott Bud Light and NEVER DRINK IT AGAIN EVER.”
Some Twitter users claimed that other significant beer brands had also demonstrated support for the LGBTQ+ community, while others noted that Bud Light has been a partner of LGBT Pride “for over 20 years.” Wrote Ed Krassenstein, a social media personality. (According to Boing Boing)
“Good luck finding another beer. The problem for them is that virtually every major beer company… have multiple programs that also support the LGBTQ+ communities. LGBTQ+ support isn’t the problem. Bigotry is the problem!”
