On Wednesday ( 1 March 2023) morning, the New York City Council hosted the department’s first-ever oversight hearing regarding the NYPD Strategic Response Group. On the day before the hearing, however, the NYCLU, advocates, and political officials marched at City Hall, demanding openness and accountability from the unit.
After several delays, the oversight hearing has finally arrived. Many people claiming they were SRG violence victims expressed interest in testifying. None of the Cops showed up.
Threat actors characterize the SRG as ruthless, well-funded, and above reproach. Protesters, according to them, are abused by the unit. Because of this, an investigation hearing was held by the Council’s Committee on Public Safety.
The Committee looks into the squad’s size and breadth, tactics and training, and complaints of abuse and brutality. Chi Osse, a member of the City Council, claims that the NYPD spent $360 million on overtime and $90 million on the SRG last year, while the same amount reduced other city services.
