At a press conference on Tuesday in California, the solitary winner of the record-breaking $2.04 billion Powerball jackpot that was won in November was announced.

The California Lottery announced that Edwin Castro, the winner of the highest prize in the history of the lottery, chose to receive his winnings in a single payment of $997.6 million. Early in the month of November, in Altadena, California, Castro made the winning purchase of the winning ticket, which matched all six of the numbers drawn.

“That ticket is the sole winner of the largest jackpot in U.S. Lottery history! The ticket matched the numbers 10-33-41-47-56 and the Powerball number 10,” the California Lottery said at the time. “As much as I am shocked and ecstatic to have won the Powerball drawing, the real winner is the California Public School system,” Castro’s statement reads.

As a result of the victory, supplementary funding in the amount of $156.3 million will be allocated to the state’s public schools, which will set a new high for the sum. The prize money will be distributed among the schools in proportion to their average daily attendance rates.

According to a statement made by the California Lottery in a press release, “This cash is primarily discretionary, meaning that schools can use this for critical, yet unfunded instructional activities they would otherwise not be able to afford.”

The lottery reported that the winning ticket was purchased at Joe’s Service Center. Joe Chahayed, the proprietor of the shop, is a Syrian immigrant. He was awarded a bonus of one million dollars by the lottery for selling the winning ticket.

According to the Multi-State Lottery Association, the odds of winning a Powerball jackpot are one in 292.2 million. This number represents the likelihood of winning.

The lottery in the state of California “is subject to public disclosure laws,” which means that the full name of the winner, the location of the retailer that sold the ticket, and the specifics of the winnings “are matters of public record and are subject to disclosure,” according to the website for the lottery. This is because the lottery “is subject to public disclosure laws” in the state of California.
