At 2:26 a.m. on Sunday, a shooting occurred at West Melrose Street and North Central Avenue, according to police. Shots were fired as a fight at a neighborhood tavern spilled onto the street.

Samuel Parsons, 32, was accused on Tuesday of three counts of first-degree murder and one act of armed kidnapping, according to the police.

According to the police, Parsons-Salas was at the Vera Lounge for the birthday celebration of Mariah Vera, the owner of the lounge, when he was asked to leave. According to police, he opened fire on the four victims at close range. Along with Mercedes Tavares, 24, and Mario Pozuelos, 26, Vera’s father, Ricky Vera, who was 50 years old, also perished in the incident.

According to authorities, Mariah Vera was shot in the head and was taken in critical condition to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center.

After spending time for a 2009 house invasion in Albany Park in which two other persons were also shot dead, Parsons-Salas was released on parole in September. He was already a convicted felon.

In that case, Parsons-Salas was initially accused of murder but later admitted guilt to two charges of a house invasion. Five years later, Parsons-Salas, 23 then, and another man were charged with first-degree murder.

But although he agreed to plead guilty to charges of house invasion, which carried an eight-year penalty, those accusations against him were later dismissed.

In a statement released Thursday, the Cook County State’s Attorney said, “This case, like all others, was contested using the facts, the evidence, and the law. We concluded that the evidence did not satisfy the burden of proof necessary to proceed with the murder accusations against Samuel Salas after carefully examining the case, including the defendant’s role in the crime in 2010.

Salas was sentenced to 8 years in prison on September 19, 2018, following his guilty plea to the felony charge of home invasion, which the court accepted as a conclusion to this matter. The Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office is dedicated to pursuing justice and will keep helping individuals affected by crime in our neighbourhoods.”
