On Thursday morning off the coast of Puerto Rico, a federal marine agent of U.S. Customs and Border Protection was shot and killed, according to authorities.

According to a statement from CBP, three marine agents were shot at as they approached the vessel, and the agents retaliated by firing at the suspects’ boat.

The shootout took place approximately 14 miles off the coast of Cabo Rojo, and the agents “suffered various gunshot injuries,” according to the statement. They were transported to hospitals.

One agent passed away, but it was unclear how the other two were doing. According to Customs and Border Protection, one of the two occupants of the suspected smuggling vessel passed away at the site while the other was taken into custody.

Alejandro Mayorkas, the secretary of homeland security, claimed to have been informed about the shooting during a congressional session on Thursday.

According to Customs and Border Protection, a different Marine Interdiction crew seized a another vessel later on Thursday morning that was carrying drugs and weapons. Two Americans who were on board were both apprehended, according to the agency.
