    Known simply as Gallagher throughout his career, American comic Leo Anthony Gallagher Jr. (July 24, 1946 – November 11, 2022) was one of the most famous stand-ups of the 1980s thanks to his trademark act of smashing a watermelon on stage with a wooden sledgehammer.  Using his “Sledge-O-Matic” sledgehammer, he destroyed tens of thousands of melons over the course of 30 years while doing between 100 and 200 shows annually.     Gallagher Early life

    Gallagher was born into an Irish and Croatian family on July 24, 1946, in Fort Bragg, North Carolina. He grew up in Lorain, Ohio, until the age of nine, when his family relocated to South Tampa, Florida, so he could attend Henry B. Plant High School. He continued his education and earned a degree in chemical engineering from USF in 1970. He studied English as a second language only.

    Gallagher got a job as the road manager for comedian/musician Jim Stafford right out of college. In 1969, Stafford and Gallagher went to California, where Gallagher made the decision to take the stage as well. He started developing his own comic routine by going to venues like The Comedy Store and The Ice House.

    Even though Johnny Carson didn’t enjoy prop humor, he appeared twice on The Tonight Show while he hosted. On December 5, 1975, he made his first Tonight Show appearance to show off his prop, “The Tonight Show Home Game.” He returned on May 9, 1979. When Carson was absent, he also appeared on the show to perform multiple times for the audience.

    In addition to frequenting the Playboy Clubs, Gallagher made appearances on both The Mike Douglas Show and The Merv Griffin Show. Although Gallagher, who called himself the “Wizard of Odd,” was famous for “witty wordplay” and incisive observational comedy, his main act was the use of the “Sledge-O-Matic,” a big wooden mallet with which he smashed various food items and other things, culminating in a watermelon.

    (Oranges, cottage cheese, pound cake, beans, cheeseburgers, tubes of toothpaste, gaming consoles, and grapes were also frequent Gallagher targets.) Physical prop comedy like the Sledge-O-Matic performance parodied the unintentionally funny commercials for the Ronco Veg-O-Matic, a kitchen gadget that was widely advertised on U.S.

    television from the mid-1960s through the 1970s. Those in attendance at a Gallagher show either received ponchos or were warned to bring raincoats in preparation for the possibility of flying objects.     Gallagher joked that he was “broke” because he had lost nearly all of his money in stock market speculation. But his longtime manager said, “We all need to be as broke as Leo,” thus the statement was a joke. Gallagher collapsed on stage while performing on March 10, 2011, in Rochester, Minnesota, holding his chest.

    A mild heart attack was suspected, so he was taken to Saint Marys Hospital. Intense chest pains first hit Gallagher on March 14, 2012, a year later, right before he was set to perform in Lewisville, Texas. According to Gallagher’s manager, the comedian had a “mild to major” heart attack and was put into an induced coma at the hospital while specialists examined his heart.

    Slowly, on March 18, 2012, after physicians had replaced two coronary stents, he awoke from his coma. In no time at all, he was able to start communicating with his loved ones again. His manager Christine Sherrer said he was talking, laughing, and breathing on his own. While receiving hospice care at his Palm Desert, California, residence, Gallagher passed away on November 11, 2022. During the ’70s and ’80s, Gallagher was a well-known “prop” comic who gained notoriety for smashing water melons onstage.
