Season 2 of Gilmore Girls brings the glamour and drama of the Gilded Age back in full force. On February 14, 2022, the HBO show was picked up for a second season. The second season has already begun filming and will take place in both New York and Rhode Island. The launch of this period drama was in January of 2022, and it was the brainchild of Downton Abbey’s creator, Julian Fellowes. The Gilded Age is a historical account of a period of dramatic economic and social upheaval in New York City throughout the nineteenth century.

It was HBO’s best Monday night premiere since the 2019 limited series Chernobyl. In March of 2022, the first season’s nine episodes concluded. Fellowes told THR, “I’m very interested in American history, which I think is very rich, and I think the Gilded Age period in many ways was a precursor of 20th century America, that the very high-gloss, high-glamour, high-consumerist America that would flower with Hollywood and all these various other aspects was really being laid and rooted in the Gilded Age, in those super-prosperous years after end of the Civil War.” The Gilded Age season 2: here’s all we know about it, from when it might come out to who will be in it.

Where Did Season 1 Leave Off

The first season finale was quite dramatic. A wall was suddenly built between Marian and Mr. Raikes. It was decided that they would elope, but he surprised her by announcing that his intended bride was the wealthy heiress Cissie Bingham. He put his financial interests before of Marian’s feelings, breaking her heart. At Bertha’s extravagant debutante ball, Marian ran across Mr. Raikes once more. As soon as their conversation ended, Larry approached Marian and asked her to dance.

After Larry helped Marian avoid an embarrassing situation with her aunts over Mr. Raikes, Marian felt obligated to dance for him. Bertha, of course, recently had her moment in the spotlight to prove that she actually belonged among New York City’s elite. Meeting each other face to face for the first time at the debutante ball, Bertha and Caroline seemed to have settled their differences. Bertha understood that she shared many characteristics with Caroline. Bertha promised, “If you let me, I’ll be a nice friend to you.”

The fact that Peggy learned her son, whom she had believed to have died during childbirth, was actually still alive was a crucial plot point of the first season. To avoid public shame, Peggy’s father secretly placed their son for adoption. In spite of Mr. Scott’s refusal to reveal the boy’s whereabouts, Peggy and her mother have set out to track him out on their own.

The Gilded Age Season 2

The Gilded Age Season 2 Expectations

“The Gilded Age was a period of great economic change, of huge fortunes, gained and lost, and of the heated struggle between old money and new,” reads the official logline for season 2. On East 61st Street, where Marian Brook and her thoroughly old money aunts Agnes van Rhijn and Ada Brook dwell, they are direct across the street from the stupendously rich George and Bertha Russell, who is the focus of this rivalry.

Both Russells are very driven to succeed in New York’s competitive business and social environments. While Marian is busy making her way in the world of the Black elite in Manhattan, her close friend and confidante Peggy Scott is doing the same in Brooklyn. Will the old social norms survive in this shiny new world on the cusp of the modern era, or will there be a complete rewrite of the rules?

The Gilded Age Season 2 Premiere

The Gilded Age season 2 has not yet been given a launch date by HBO. Season one debuted in January 2022 and wrapped up in March of the same year. Production on Season 2 began in May of 2022, so we could see it premiere in early 2023 like Season 1. HBO also hasn’t shared the number of episodes for season 2. There were 9 total episodes in the first season. At the time, HBO Max has no current plans for The Gilded Age spinoffs. Denée did, however, say that she would watch a certain spinoff. Apparently, a “spinoff of Peggy and Marian’s love” would be a dream come true for her, as reported by Us Weekly. The romance between Peggy and Marian, in her opinion, is the show’s “real love story.”
