The Murdaughs are a wealthy South Carolina family, and Murdaugh Murdeɼs: A Southern Scandal, a new Netflix true cɼime documentary series, explores their story. A series of incἰdents, including a tragic boating accἰdent, as well as the circumstances behind the murdeɼs of matriarch Margaret “Maggie” Murdaugh and her son Paul in the summer of 2021 are all under investigation in the novel Murdaugh Murdeɼs.
The series also deals with the continuing trial of Alex Murdaugh, Paul’s father and Maggie’s husband, who has maintained his innocence and pleaded not guilty despite being charged with their murdeɼs. As a fourth Murdaugh family member, the documentary also includes Buster, the additional son of Maggie and Alex Murdaugh.
Richard Alex Murdaugh, often known as Buster, was an employee of his father’s law practice and a student at the University of South Carolina Law School, which was something of a family tradition before he kἰlled his mother and brother. Nevertheless, he was ultimately fired as a result of a plagiarism-related issue.
Buster’s family reportedly paid $60,000 to assure that he would be readmitted to the college in order to finish his legal degree, as reported by the local publication The Post and Courier. But he hasn’t started studying again yet. You can read the full article for more details:

Alex was “heartbroken” at the murdeɼs of Maggie and Paul, he testified in his testimony. Buster has watched his father’s entire trial in person, and according to Law & Cime, throughout the hearings, Buster has reportedly been uneasy and hid his head in his hands while the attorneys describe the horrifying specifics of the double cɼime.
On March 2, Buster’s father was found guilty of both murdeɼs and on March 3, the judge sentenced him to two consecutive lifetimes in prison.
Where Was Buster During the Murdeɼs?
When Alex Murdaugh arrived home on June 7, 2021, he allegedly witnessed Maggie and Paul being shot to deἀth not far from the dog kennels on their property. He dialed 911 and Buster at the same time. Buster gave a trial testimony.
The kἰllings happened when Buster was in his girlfriend’s house in Rock Hill, South Carolina, more than 200 miles away. When he found out what had happened, he immediately went to the Murdaugh residence.
What Was Buster’s Reaction to the Verdict?
On Friday, March 3, 2023, a judge sentenced Alex Murdaugh to two consecutive life terms in prison for the murdeɼs of Maggie and Paul Murdaugh. According to a witness at the sentence at the Colleton County Courthouse, which was quoted by the New York Post:
“Buster held up pretty well until the cameras were off him, but then he collapsed… He was crying uncontrollably. The uncles finally got him into a car.”
Buster Has Been Linked to Two Other Deἀths
One of the occurrences covered in Murdaugh Murde’s was the watercraft accἰdent that closed Mallory Beach. However, they have now agreed to a settlement that removes Buster and his mother’s names from the case. The Beach family had previously maintained that Paul Murdaugh was drunk at the time.
The unsolved deἀth of Stephen Smith, a 19-year-old former friend and classmate of Buster who was found deἀd on a road not far from the Murdaughs’ home, is also mentioned in the movie.
Despite the fact that a hit-and-run was first believed to be the cause of Smith’s deἀth, authorities at the time argued that his ἰnjuries were compatible with a collision. As a result, Buster came under suspicion because it was claimed that he was dating openly gay man Smith.

The upsurge of interest in Smith’s case following the release of the Murdaugh documentary has led to the opening of a new investigation into his cause of deἀth. According to Today, Buster, upon discovering that Smith’s body was about to be discovered, made his first public statement following his father’s imprisonment to deny any involvement. He stated:
“I have tried my best to ignore the vicious rumors about my involvement in Stephen Smith’s tragic deἀth that continue to be published in the media as I grieve over the brutal murdeɼs of my mother and brother.
