According to the McCracken County Sheriff’s Office, a man from Florida was arrested on Saturday and charged with murder after reportedly beating a couple in the parking lot of a Kentucky hotel and then shooting and murdering an employee at the hotel. The incident took place in Kentucky.

Robert Pannell, age 55, was charged with first-degree murder as well as assault, wanton endangerment, disorderly conduct, intimidation, and resisting arrest. Pannell was also accused of menacing another individual.

At around 9:48 a.m. on Saturday morning, law enforcement authorities were dispatched to a Best Western hotel in the southwestern region of Kentucky on the report of an active shooter.

While a sheriff’s deputy was searching the hotel, a Paducah police officer found Pannell in the parking lot and detained him. The employee was found on the first floor of the motel with several gunshot wounds to the head and torso. During the course of the inquiry, the detectives learned that Pannell is accused of physically assaulting a couple in the parking lot because they were unable to give him a cigarette lighter.

According to the sheriff, the suspect then brought a weapon into the hotel with him and opened fire without targeting a specific person, which resulted in the death of the worker. There were no more victims of the firing.

At the time of the incident, Pannell was a guest at the hotel. He is originally from the city of Palm Coast, Florida. According to the documents kept at the jail, he is currently being detained at the McCracken County Jail on a total bond of $2.5 million.
