Rafael Viñoly, an architect who was born in Uruguay and designed a building in London called “The Walkie-Talkie,” has died, his firm says. He was 78.
His son Román said in a statement –
“On behalf of my family, my co-workers and our many partners throughout the world, I am saddened to report that my father, the founder and namesake of our firm Rafael Viñoly Architects, passed away unexpectedly.”
“He was a visionary who will be missed by all those whose lives he touched through his work.”
Rafael Viñoly Architects was started by Viñoly in 1983. It is based in New York City but has offices and projects all over the world.
Viñoly’s award-winning body of work, which includes “The Walkie-Talkie” building, which got its name because it looks like a communication device, is his legacy.
The building is one of his most well-known works. It is in the heart of London’s financial district and has been criticized for its futuristic look and for reflecting light hot enough to damage cars and cook eggs.

Other projects include 432 Park Avenue, a tower with a grid of 10-square-meter windows that rises into the New York skyline, and a terminal at Carrasco International Airport that looks like a wing and rolls into the dunes of his home country.
In Uruguay, there is also the circular Laguna Garzón Bridge, which forces people to slow down and take in the view.
In Asia, Viñoly’s work can be seen at the Tokyo International Forum. The Glass Hall is made of two glass and steel arcs that cross each other.
Viñoly also designed the English Premier League team, Manchester City’s training ground, City Football Academy, the club tweeting –
“We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of our cherished friend and renowned architect, Rafael Viñoly.”
“Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this difficult time.”
