Klay Thompson was seen walking into the American Airlines Center on Wednesday night when the Golden State Warriors were in Dallas to play the Mavericks.
He was wearing a Dallas Cowboys jersey, which wasn’t just because he was in the area. He did this to honor a friend who had died.
Tight end Gavin Escobar and a woman both died in a climbing accident in Southern California last September. Around 12:30 p.m. local time, rescuers were called to Tahquitz Rock, which is near Idyllwild. This is where the accident happened.
The Warriors posted a picture of Thompson walking in while wearing the jersey and said that both he and Escobar are from Rancho Santa Margarita, California.
From 2013 to 2017, Escobar played in the NFL for the Dallas Cowboys and the Baltimore Ravens. During his career, he caught 30 passes for 333 yards and eight touchdowns. The Alliance of American Football was the last team he played for.
Escobar stopped playing football in February 2022 and joined the Long Beach Fire Department. The department wrote on Twitter at the time –
“It is with deep sadness that we announce the off-duty de@th of Long Beach Firefighter Gavin Escobar.”
“Hired on February 5, 2022, Firefighter Escobar was assigned to Fire Station 3 on B-shift.”
Escobar went to college at San Diego State where he played football. In the school’s statement regarding his passing, it wrote (as reported by Fox News) –
“Gavin was the epitome of a student-athlete and a leader on and off the field.”
Thompson and his Warriors have moved up quickly in the Western Conference standings. As of Wednesday night, they were the No. 6 seed. He has been a big part of that happening. This season, he has averaged 22.0 points and 32.9 minutes per game.
This season, when Steph Curry was hurt and couldn’t play, Thompson was a key part of making sure Golden State’s offence didn’t suffer too much.
