Family members and people in the community don’t believe what the police say about the death of a Black man in Robbinsdale last summer.
Late in February, people started sharing graphic pictures of what they said was Khalil Azad’s body on social media, along with questions about whether he really drowned by accident as the authorities said.
Robbinsdale police issued a press release in response to the social media posts, saying that a driver ran away from a traffic stop on July 3, 2022, and was found dead in Crystal Lake two days later.

The Hennepin County Medical Examiner’s Office later said that the man’s name was Azad and that he drowned in freshwater by accident.
Robbinsdale police say that a review of footage from body-worn cameras showed that no contact was made with the driver who left the scene of the accident.
The department also disputed claims made on social media about a certain police sergeant, saying that he was not on duty at the time.
Black Lives Matter says that the lives of black people are important. Minnesota is one of the places where people are asking the mayor of Robbinsdale to share all of the body camera footage that has to do with Khalil Azad’s death.
At Crystal Lake, where Azad’s body was found last summer, there will be a candlelight vigil on Thursday night.
