Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves opened in the U.S. with $38.5 million, which was enough to push John Wick: Chapter 4 off the top spot and put Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves at the top.
The big-budget movie based on Hasbro’s fantasy board game did better than expected, but it will still need strong legs if Paramount and eOne want it to start a new franchise. The movie cost $150 million to make before marketing.
Dungeons & Dragons have a good chance of doing that, since audiences gave it an A- CinemaScore and gave it great reviews. But making changes to games has always been hard. Last year, Sony’s Uncharted opened in the U.S. with $44 million, putting it on track to be a success.
Wes Anderson, who has one of the most distinctive voices in Hollywood, is about to return to the big screen. Asteroid City, his new movie, will be out soon:
Before the weekend, it looked like Dungeons & Dragons would open to about $30 million. No matter what happens, Hasbro’s D&D universe will be bigger because of it.
Dungeons & Dragons are based on Hasbro’s popular role-playing game and were directed by Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley. It has an all-star cast, led by Chris Pine, Michelle Rodriguez, Regé-Jean Page, Justice Smith, Sophia Lillis, Chloe Coleman, Daisy Head, and Hugh Grant. The movie was directed by Goldstein and Daley, who also worked together on Game Night. They wrote the script with Michael Gilio.
The movie also comes out in more than 50 countries outside of the U.S., including the U.K., which is distributed by eOne. Last weekend, Lionsgate’s John Wick 4 opened to a strong $73.8 million. This weekend, it dropped to No. 2 with an estimated $29 million.
After that came Scream VI from Paramount and Creed III from MGM. His Only Son, a new faith-based movie from Angel Studio that opened in 1,920 theaters with $5 million, rounded out the top five.
Focus Features’ A Thousand and One, which will be shown at the Sundance Film Festival in 2023, was the other new nationwide release over the weekend. It made between $1.7 million and $2 million from 926 locations.
