Cinderella Production
Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Cinderella was the third cinematic adaption of the musical. Songwriters Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II originally composed Cinderella as a musical solely for television starring Julie Andrews, which broadcast in 1957 to 107 million viewers. A new version of the show, featuring Lesley Ann Warren, debuted on CBS in 1965 and ran until 1972. Craig Zadan and Neil Meron, who would later create the 2002 TV movie, first approached the Rodgers & Hammerstein Organization in 1992 to inquire about buying the film rights to Cinderella. as everyone is impressed with cinderella 1997 cast.
The revival of the genre and the popularity of CBS’s 1993 production of the Broadway musical Gypsy, starring Bette Midler, both sparked new creations. After the success of Gypsy, CBS executive Jeff Sagansky approached Zadan and Meron to begin developing a sequel. The producers of Gypsy were approached by Whitney Houston’s agent Nicole David the day following the show’s premiere to see if they were interested in establishing a comparable project featuring her client; David recommended Cinderella, in which Houston would feature. As with the production cinderella 1997 cast also play a important role.
The film was supposed to air on CBS at the end of the 1994–1995 television season, but there were numerous delays. By 1996, both the network and Houston had lost interest in the show in favour of others, and the singer had already moved on to other projects. Zadan said that Houston “had so many other solid things that she was doing that ‘Cinderella’ took a back seat” because of her fame. Singer outgrew her Cinderella phase as she got older. By the time she got married and had children, Houston said she was no longer “feeling like Cinderella,” and she thought it would be a “stretch” for her as an actress to play the ingenue.
