In response, Chris Rock will do his best and go on stage to retaliate. According to Netflix, on March 4, the iconic comedian will deliver a live standup special discussing Will Smith slapping him at the Oscars.
Although Rock has made brief references to the event in his standup routines throughout the previous year, this will be the first time he elaborates on the details of the incident. As expected, the Wall Street Journal broke the story first.
In January, Rock performed an arena show in Charleston with Dave Chappelle serving as an informal workshop for the material that would eventually become special.
According to a source at the show who talked with CNN, he spoke about the now-famous interaction with Smith around the two-thirds mark of his set while dressed in all white. Rock made several jokes about the widespread anger after the Oscars event.
“The thing people wanna know … did it hurt? Hell yeah it hurt. He played Muhammad Ali! I played Pookie (in ‘New Jack City’). Even in animated movies I’m a zebra, he’s a f—ing shark. I got hit so hard, I heard ‘Summertime’ ringing in my ears,” Rock joked, according the source.
Rock also noted the physical contrast between the two characters in another line.
