For at least 1,000 people, YouTube sensation MrBeast is making the world more understandable. The most recent prank by the content producer was paying for 1,000 people who were blind or nearly blind but could not afford the operation to remove their cataracts.

The Saturday video, which has over 32 million views as of Sunday afternoon, features MrBeast, real name Jimmy Donaldson, claiming that “We’re treating a thousand people’s blindness.”

The video includes heartwarming before-and-after shots of patients seeing following the operation. The YouTuber also handed some of the participants financial donations and other goodies.

In Jacksonville, Florida, Donaldson collaborated with ophthalmologist and surgeon Jeff Levenson to carry out the initial series of operations. Levenson has managed the “Gift of Sight” program, which offers free cataract surgery to uninsured individuals who have been rendered legally blind by cataracts for over 20 years.

Levenson states in the film that those who require cataract removal surgery account for half of all blindness worldwide. Levenson told CNN that after having his cataract surgery, he was motivated to assist others in getting cataract surgery.

After having his cataract surgery, he observed, “I was shocked by how brilliant, beautiful, and colorful the world was in the days and weeks that followed.” But I was astounded to learn that there are likely 200 million people worldwide who lack access to cataract surgery and are either blind or almost blind due to cataracts.

In September, Levenson received a call from a Donaldson staff member. He stated, “I had never heard of Mr. Beast. “I nearly hung up, so. However, I thankfully did not disconnect.”

They first called homeless shelters and free clinics to compile a list of patients in the Jacksonville region who required cataract surgery but could not pay for it. After a while, they had a group of 40 patients, and Levenson operated on them all in a single day, from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Patients were “in astonishment that someone would seek them out to rescue them from blindness, and then have the kindness and generosity of heart to offer the surgery,” according to Levenson.

Additionally, the ophthalmologist put Donaldson’s group in touch with SEE International, whose chief medical officer he is. Thanks to the foundation, patients in need can receive free eye care anywhere in the world.

With the group’s assistance, Donaldson could operate on 1,000 patients over around three weeks. The video shows patients in Jamaica, Honduras, Namibia, Mexico, Indonesia, Brazil, Vietnam, and Kenya undergoing surgery.

Levenson expressed his desire for “a coordinated effort to end senseless blindness” in response to the video and Donaldson’s kindness. He claimed that if Mr. Beast could start a fire and garner public and private backing, half of the world’s blindness could be eradicated. “With great advances in human productivity and potential, and without spending all that much money.”
