One of the most adored shows from the 1970s is The Mary Tyler Moore Show. Mary Tyler Moore played Mary Richards, a character in her early 30s who was single and focused on her work. However, Moore wasn’t single in real life. She had three marriages, the most popular of which was her one with Grant Tinker.

Why Did Tinker and Moore Ultimately Divorce?

Tinker and Moore had it all, as they found great success with The Mary Tyler Moore Show. But Moore was unhappy in her relationship with her husband, Grant Tinker. Moore said that she felt ’empty’ in her relationship with Tinker.

According to People, She wrote in her biography-

“He had just been offered a job in programming at NBC, and he was thrilled. I said to him at the time, ‘I bet we’re going to be television’s golden couple.’ What I didn’t see then was how empty the relationship would become.”

Moore went on to describe that she and Tinker were always working. And their disagreements worsened over time.

Moore continued, “One night in 1973, after dinner and an argument, he said he thought we should separate, that we had poisoned the marriage.”

Moore and Tinker divorced for six weeks before reuniting in Beverly Hills. Moore, though, had an affair, and Tinker also moved on.

She wrote, “When I returned to Los Angeles for Christmas, I found out there was someone else in Grant’s life now. We’d moved on in mute concert.”

They married in 1962 and divorced in 1981.
