DeMeco Ryans Early Life
Ryans was born in Bessemer, Alabama, on July 28, 1984. He was a linebacker at Jess Lanier High School when he played football in high school. Ryans’s performance in his senior year earned him an opportunity to play for his native state of Alabama, the Crimson Tide, and made him a three-star recruit.
DeMeco Ryans’ Early Coaching Career
DeMeco couldn’t stay away from football for very long after his release in 2016. The San Francisco 49ers hired him in 2017 to be their defensive quality control coach. By 2018, he was the inside linebackers coach for the team.
Finally, Ryans took over as defensive coordinator in 2021 following Robert Salah’s departure. The opportunity to take over as head coach of the Minnesota Vikings after his first season as defensive coordinator presented itself, but Ryans declined a second interview.
He was going to start his best coordinating season and got to return home, but little did he know that this would end up being the best decision of his career.
DeMeco Ryans Playing Career
Between 2002 and 2005, Ryans played special teams and as a backup linebacker for Alabama. However, he gained popularity in Alabama each year, and in 2005 he was voted the SEC’s Defensive Player of the Year.
In his final game at Alabama, Ryans was voted the Cotton Bowl’s defensive MVP. Without a doubt, he was an All-American. The Houston Texans chose Ryans with the 33rd overall choice in the 2006 NFL Draft.
Then, against all odds, Ryans started as a middle linebacker in his first season, setting off a trend that would last the rest of his career. He recorded 126 solo tackles, 3.5 sacks, and one interception in his rookie campaign.
He would have had his finest season statistically out of his nine NFL seasons. Ryans earned the NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year in 2006 after being second in the league in tackles. In his second season, Ryans was named to his first Pro Bowl and made the first team as an All-Pro linebacker.
