U.S. President Joe Biden and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz met secretly in the Oval Office for over an hour Friday after pronouncing themselves in “lockstep” on maintaining pressure on Russia over its invasion of Ukraine.
Even their best advisers were left out of the conversation. When the conference finished, Biden and Scholz moved across the hall to the Roosevelt Room, where the American and German officials had been chatting.
According to a senior administration official who spoke on condition of anonymity to characterize the discussions, Biden quipped that the two presidents had fixed all the world’s problems by themselves.
The White House remained silent about any possible deals or plans that had been struck. According to the official readout, the two leaders “exchanged viewpoints on other global concerns,” but little further was revealed about their conversation about the war.
