A Man From Springville Died In A Two-Car Crash At The intersection Of Old State Road 37 And Orchard Lane

Troopers from the Indiana State Police Bloomington District responded to Old State Road 37 (South Walnut Street) and Orchard Lane on Tuesday, November 8 at at 12:50 p.m. to investigate a two-vehicle incident with serious injuries.

A 1998 Oldsmobile SUV was driving south on Walnut Street whe the driver had to make evasive maneuvers to avoid hitting a 1989 Chevrolet van that was attempting to pull into a nearby driveway, according to a preliminary investigation by Trp. Jeremy Cox.

The Oldsmobile SUV side-swiped the Chevrolet Van in the same direction as it attempted to avoid a rear-end collision, then veered off the road.

Investigators think the Oldsmobile took off and began to roll before coming to an upright stop in a nearby yard. The Oldsmobile SUV’s driver was ejected from the car and discovered unconscious and unresponsive after the collision but before it came to rest.

The Monroe County Coroner’s Office declared Springville resident Addam Eckert, 38, dead at the scene despite attempts to save his life. According to the investigation, Eckert was not buckled up, and speed was a factor in the incident according to witnesses and evidence found at the scene.

Before being sent to a nearby hospital for a blood draw, as is required of drivers involved in a tragic collision, the driver of the Chevrolet van was carried there unharmed, remained on the scene, and cooperated fully with the inquiry. The results of both drivers’ toxicology tests are pending.

Trooper John Yung, Matt Harris, Kent Rohlfing, Sgt. Ryan Miller, Sgt. Ian Portteus, the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, Ken’s Westside Towing, and the Monroe County Coroner’s Office all assisted Trooper Cox at the site.
