Nearly a month after federal officials declared activity at Hawaii’s Kilauea volcano to have stopped, it started erupting once more on Thursday. Kilauea is one of the most active volcanoes in the world.
According to the U.S. Geological Survey, webcam images of the Halemaumau crater in the volcano’s top caldera showed lava flow. The organization raised the volcano’s alert status from watch to warning and stated that it was assessing potential risks.
The eruption has so far just affected the crater. Since 1983, the volcano in Hawaii’s Big Island’s Volcanoes National Park has frequently erupted. When fractures in its lower East Rift Zone erupted in 2018, lava covered 13 square miles of the area, destroying 700 homes and other structures.
Between September 2021 and last month, Kilauea erupted. Following a string of significant earthquakes in November, Mauna Loa, the largest active volcano in the world, erupted once more on Hawaii’s Big Island. It had not erupted for 38 years. Read the full news for more details.
Hawaii Volcano Eruption for the Third Time This Year
The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) reported on Sunday that the Kilauea volcano on Hawaii’s Big Island started to erupt on Sunday afternoon, with flows now restricted to the adjacent crater floor. Fissures near the volcano’s crater’s base are producing lava flows on the crater floor, according to webcam images.

While the eruption “does not pose a lava threat to communities,” the Hawaii Emergency Management Agency noted on X, the social networking platform that replaced Twitter, that volcanic particles and gases may cause breathing problems for people exposed.
Strong seismic activity and a “rapid uplift” of the peak, according to USGS, preceded the eruption. As it assessed the eruption, the government changed the volcano alert from watch to warning and increased Kilauea’s aviation color code from orange to red.
Kilauea is one of the most active volcanoes in the world and is situated in a restricted region of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Numerous earthquakes and a significant eruption at Kilauea in 2019 caused the destruction of hundreds of houses and businesses.
One of the most active volcanoes in the world is Kilauea, which is found on the Big Island of Hawaii. In 2018, there was a significant eruption that caused thousands of locals to flee their homes and damaged more than 700.
The volcano had been steadily erupting for decades before that eruption, primarily away from residential regions with high densities of people. According to officials, the most recent eruption is totally contained within Hawaii Volcanoes National Park and does not represent a threat to homes.
US Geological Survey Volcanoes said in a tweet:
“What was once a cooling lava lake is now a new fissure eruption,”
The Sun has set on the new eruption within Halemaʻumaʻu crater at Kīlauea’s summit.
